January 2027 sounds impossibly far away. It's not. And if you're an LGBTQ+ traveler, "where should we go" comes with an extra layer most other people don't have to think about.
This summer turned into the season of last-minute bookings for a lot of my clients, and honestly? That's a stressful way to travel when you're already doing the mental math of "is this destination safe, welcoming, actually queer-friendly, or just claiming to be." So let's get ahead of it.
If a winter getaway is even a little bit on your radar, here's why now is the time to start:
- The best rooms — and the most affirming properties — go first. The handful of truly LGBTQ+-welcoming boutique stays and adults-only resorts don't sit around waiting for you to decide.
- Demand is higher than you'd think. January looks far away on the calendar, but bucket-list destinations and peak winter weeks fill up quietly and fast.
- Flexibility gives you room to actually vet a place. More time means more research, more options, and more ability to choose somewhere you'll feel genuinely comfortable, not just somewhere that "should be fine."
- Having a trip on the calendar makes January survivable. This one's less travel fact, more public service announcement.

Iceland | The Europe Pick
Iceland consistently ranks among the most LGBTQ+ friendly countries in the world, and in January it's putting on its best show with the Northern Lights, geothermal lagoons, snow falling while you soak in warm water next to the person you love. No performative rainbow flags required; it's just baked into the culture.
Perfect for: couples who want to hold hands without thinking twice, photographers, anyone craving something otherworldly

Costa Rica | The Sun & Sand Pick
Costa Rica has had marriage equality since 2020 and a genuinely warm, welcoming culture to go with it. This is especially true in spots like Manuel Antonio, which has become a real hub for LGBTQ+ travelers. January brings dry season sunshine, warm water, and the option to split your trip between beach and rainforest without ever feeling like you have to explain yourselves.
Cape Town, South Africa | The Far Flung Pick
South Africa was the first country in the world to constitutionally protect against discrimination based on sexual orientation, and Cape Town in particular has one of the most established, visible queer scenes on the continent. January is warm, sunny, high season.
Park City, Utah | The Close to Home Pick
I know, I know, Utah isn't the first place you'd guess. But Park City itself is a liberal mountain enclave with a long history of welcoming LGBTQ+ visitors, including its own annual gay ski week. The mountains are fully open, the snow is excellent, and there's plenty for skiers and non-skiers alike.
