This is something you want to think about BEFORE you book your travel. Reason being, you might want to book your travel on a specific card to reach a bonus or use a specific benefit like auto rental insurance or trip interruption/cancellation insurance.

If you're a frequent flyer, the right credit card can save you hundreds of dollars a year in free checked bags, better seats, and points that turn into actual flights. The wrong one will just sit in your wallet racking up an annual fee you never use. So I wanted to break down the four cards I talk about most with clients, what I actually love about each one, and where they fall short, so you can figure out what fits your travel style best.

A quick disclosure before we dive in: some of the links below are my referral links, which means if you apply and get approved, I may earn a small referral bonus at no cost to you. I only include cards I'd genuinely recommend to a client sitting across from me, so use them or don't, that part's totally up to you. Also, credit card offers and terms shift around throughout the year, so always double check the current details on the issuer's site before applying.

Within each alliance, different airlines agree to work together. This can mean sharing routes, coordinating schedules, and most importantly, letting you earn and redeem miles across all of them. So for example, if you have United Airlines miles, you can also use them on Air Canada. Let me break down each alliance.

Star Alliance

Founded in 1997, Star Alliance is the original and still the biggest with 26 carriers.
