Within each alliance, different airlines agree to work together. This can mean sharing routes, coordinating schedules, and most importantly, letting you earn and redeem miles across all of them. So for example, if you have United Airlines miles, you can also use them on Air Canada. Let me break down each alliance.

Star Alliance

Founded in 1997, Star Alliance is the original and still the biggest with 26 carriers. If you're a United Airlines MileagePlus member, you're already part of this alliance.

Included airlines: Aegean, Air Canada, Air China, Air India, Air New Zealand, Ana, Asiana Airlines, Austrian, Avianca, Brussels, Copa Airlines, Croatia Airlines, Egypt Air, Ethiopian, Eva Air, ITA Airways, LOT Polish Airlines, Lufthansa, Shenzhen Airlines, Singapore Airlines, South African Airways, Swiss, TAP Air Portugal, Thai, Turkish Airlines, United Airlines

Best for travelers who love Europe and Asia, or anyone who flies United domestically and wants to maximize those miles internationally.

One World

Founded in 1999, One World has 13 airlines who are known for premium service. If you're an AAdvantage member with American, you're already part of this alliance.

Included airlines: Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Fiji Airways, Finnair, Hawaiian Airlines, Iberia, Japan Airlines, Malaysia Airlines, Oman Air, Qantas, Qatar Airways, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian, Sri Lankan Airlines

Best for travelers that are looking for business class upgrades, luxury long haul flights, or anyone whose home airport is an American Airlines hub.

SkyTeam

Founded in 2000, SkyTeam consists of 19 airlines. If you're a Delta SkyMiles member, you're already part of this alliance.

Included airlines: Aerolineas Argentinas, AeroMexico, Air Europa, Air France, China Airlines, China Eastern, Delta Air Lines, Garuda Indonesia, Kenya Airways, KLM, Korean Air, Middle East Airlines, SAS, Saudia, Tarom, Vietnam Airlines, Virgin Atlantic, Xiamen Air

Best for travelers who love France, frequent flyers through ATL or JFK, and anyone eyeing Asia or Africa.

The Benefits

Earn miles from every carrier in a given alliance. Great! You open a new tab. Then another one. Then twelve more. You’ve got three different destination Reddit threads open, a YouTube video about Cancun playing in the background, and a spreadsheet you started but abandoned halfway through because you got distracted comparing flight prices for a completely different city.

Two hours later, you’ve planned nothing. If you have ADHD, vacation planning can feel less like an exciting adventure and more like a special kind of torture. The decision fatigue is real. The hyperfocus rabbit holes are real. The paralysis that sets in when there are too many options? Very, very real.

Here’s how to make it work.

Do you want to feel restored and calm? Adventurous and energized? Connected and social? Completely alone and unbothered?

That feeling is your filter. Every decision you make after that like the destination, resort type, trip length, activities can be run through it. Does this fit the feeling I’m going for? Yes or no. It’s a much easier question for an ADHD brain to answer than “where in the world should I go?”

Hundreds of resorts. Dozens of destinations.

Set a rule for yourself before you start researching: you will consider a maximum of three options for any given decision. Three destinations. Three resorts. Three flight choices. Pick your favorite and move on. Done.

If you’re working with a travel advisor (more on that in a minute), this is one of the most valuable things they can do for you. You get the three best choices, pre-vetted, and you just pick.

class="zpheading zpheading-style-none zpheading-align-left zpheading-align-mobile-left zpheading-align-tablet-left " data-editor="true">3. Break the planning into tiny chunks

“Plan vacation” is not a task. It’s a project with seventeen sub-tasks, and putting it on your to-do list as one item is a great way to ensure it never gets done.

Break it down into the smallest possible steps, and assign each one a specific time limit. For example:

• Day 1 — Decide on the general vibe/feeling (15 minutes, then stop)

• Day 2 — Pick a destination region (20 minutes, then stop)

• Day 3 — Look at 3 resort options only (30 minutes, then stop)

• Day 4 — Decide on dates and rough budget (20 minutes, then stop)

The time limits are important. ADHD brains are notoriously bad at knowing when to stop which is how a 20-minute planning session turns into a four-hour hyperfocus spiral that ends with you knowing everything about a resort you’ve already decided not to book. Set a timer. When it goes off, close the tabs.

<h4

When every hour is accounted for, one disruption like a late checkout, a mood shift, a nap that ran long throws the whole thing off.

Plan loose. Build in buffer time between activities. Give yourself permission to skip things that no longer sound appealing once you’re actually there. The best ADHD-friendly itinerary has a handful of anchors and plenty of unstructured time around them.

Adults-only resorts are particularly good for this. The whole point is that there’s no agenda. You can do everything or nothing, and both are completely fine.

<h4

Here’s what to look for:

• All-inclusive properties eliminate the daily decision fatigue of where to eat, what to do, and how much things cost. Everything is already handled.

• Adults-only environments tend to be quieter, calmer, and more predictable (less sensory overwhelm, fewer unexpected disruptions)

• Smaller, boutique properties are often easier to navigate than sprawling mega-resorts. Fewer choices, less walking, less chance of getting overstimulated by sheer scale.

• Properties with flexible dining let you eat when you’re hungry rather than at a set reservation time

The sensory chaos of airports, the unpredictability of delays, the mental load of tracking documents and bags and gates can be a lot. Many people arrive at their destination already depleted, which makes it hard to enjoy the first day or two.

A few things that help:

• Build in a buffer day on either end of your trip if your budget allows. Arrive a day early, leave a day late. Don’t schedule anything on arrival day.

• Use a packing list app or a detailed checklist you can check off as you go. The satisfaction of checking things off is genuinely helpful.

• Have your documents in one place, already organized, before the day of travel. Don’t leave this for the morning of.

• Give yourself permission to decompress on the first day. A slow arrival day is not wasted time.

You have to remember Belize is pretty small, more like a state in the US. It's about a 2 hour drive from the coast to the inland border.

I chose to stay a night in the city because I didn't want to do all of my traveling in one day (and I also wanted to check it out). Not going to lie, there's not much going on in the city. This is where cruise lines will stop if Belize is one of the ports. There's a "tourism alley" where all the cruisers go to buy souvenirs and such. There's also a Belize museum that has 3 stars on Google, lol. Nothing really worth checking out.

The south side of the city is known for having more crime. The US has a different level travel advisory for the area south of Haulover Creek. I didn't have a ton of time to explore, as I only stayed one night, but I asked a taxi driver to take me around the city before I left for the islands. And honestly, there's really no reason tourists would go to the south side anyway, it's mostly residential. The crime is opportunistic as it's a poor area.

The hotel I stayed at was close to the port- Harbour View Cottages. Super cute place to stay! It's run by a mother and daughter team, and it doesn't feel like you're in a city when you stay there. There are one and two bedroom cottages, two pools, a spa, and a cafe all on the grounds. They also do yoga and there's a meditation area. Overall, it's just really peaceful. I enjoyed taking a dip in the pool and reading my book in my hammock. The food at the cafe was also good, and they had vegetarian and gluten free options. I always like to take note of this as this can be a huge issue for some travelers. It's nice to find places that are accommodating. I had the stewed chicken which is a traditional dish in the area.

Belize City Travel Tip: If you want to visit tourist alley, and you're not coming by cruise ship, you need to apply for entrance at least 24 hours prior.

Belize, Stop #2 : San Pedro, Ambergris Caye

From Belize city, most people travel up to the islands Ambergris Caye (pronounced key) or Caye Caulker. Both areas are very popular with tourists. There are two options to get there- ferry or flight. I took the ferry there and a flight back because I wanted to experience what both were like. The ferry is pretty bare bones, there are no amenities, it's basically a water bus. It takes about an hour to get to Caye Caulker, and another 30 minutes to Amgergris Caye. The flight is a 15 minute ride, but it's in a "puddle jumper," which I wasn't so thrilled about. But I survived, lol. Price wise, the ferry is around $35 vs the flight which is around $100. There are two ferry companies and two flight companies to choose from.

I stayed in San Pedo on Ambergris Caye which is much larger than Caye Caulker. I didn't make it to the smaller island, but I've heard the vibe is chill. It just doesn't have as many options as the larger island.

Everyone drives golf carts on the islands. I knew this ahead of time, but I didn't know there was going to be so many. Like everyone has a golf cart, so I decided to rent one last minute. They're not crazy expensive, I paid around $90 for the three days I was there. It was worth it in my opinion.

The island is split between north and south, cut by a waterway that connects the bay to the ocean. The south part of the island is much more developed and where "downtown" is. If you want to be around the hustle and bustle, you'll want to stay in this area. If you want to stay in a more quiet spot, you'll want to go more north.

I stayed at Pur Boutique Cabanas- it's an small adults only property with a taco bar. It seems like the vibe depends on the guests. The first night I arrived, it was much more of a party atmosphere, but when that group of guests left, it was much more relaxed. They have a pool as well.

I was surprised that there's really no beaches on the island except for Secret Beach (which isn't so secret anymore). I did check it out, but it was a bit too party vibe for me. Think of Secrets in Ocean City vibes. They have the tables in the water, and there's always music going. The ride there can be bumpy, as it's not paved all the way out. Definitely proceed with caution, especially if you're going with a rented golf cart. Many companies won't cover any damages occurred on this road. To get to secret beach you have to travel north, and then you cut over to the west coast.

The northern side of the island is being heavily developed. The road isn't paved all the way up there, but there are a ton of new resorts in the area. I'm sure it will be paved eventually, but something you'll want to consider when deciding where to stay on the island.

The big attractions in the area are snorkeling and diving. South of the island is Hol Chan Marine Reserve (translates into tiny channel). The reef that hugs Belize's coast is the second largest in the world (great barrier reef is #1) and runs north into Mexico and south into Honduras. The area is very protected, and you must go there with a guide. They charge you a $15 entrance fee (which you need to pay in cash for).

I signed up for two snorkels- one in zone a on the reef, and one in zone d with the nurse sharks. The reef was lovely and truly the best reef I've seen since Australia. I saw some animals I haven't seen before like an octopus (finally) and a reef shark. I also saw a manta ray and sea turtle which I'll never get enough of! They're so graceful in the water.

I wasn't sure what to expect with the nurse sharks. I guess they don't have front teeth, so they're "safe" to swim with lol. You have a choice of jumping in the water with them, or you can stay in the boat to watch them. My group of 8 went half and half on this choice. They feed them chum to get them to come over. I did get a little nervous when soooo many were coming for the food. They're the size of me which was a bit intimidating, especially when you see 10-15 swimming towards you. But I just gave myself some space, and I was okay. I wasn't in the swarm of them like the one guy lol. Overall, I was glad I did it as it's the largest animals I've swam with, YOLO!

San Pedro Travel Tip: You can rent reserve a golf cart ahead of time, and they will meet you at the ferry or airport (depending how you arrive). This way you don't have to worry about grabbing a cab.

Belize, Stop #3: Placencia

Once I arrived back in Belize City, I grabbed my rental car and drove down the coast to Placencia. It was around a three hour drive.

Placencia is a peninsula. Some of it is very thin, but it widens out at the bottom. At one point, the air strip and ocean are just across the road from each other.

There are a lot of ex-pats living in this area. You can tell a lot of rich Americans decided to build mansions on the water to retire in. There are still open waterfront lots, but you can tell it's being developed.

The main part of town is really just a strip along the water. There's a main driving road, and there's a walking path that runs parallel. At the very end of the walking trail, there is a pier. Towards this end is where it's more "hoppin." It was definitely giving me Florida vibes. There were restaurants, bars, shops, all along the path- including the big titty rum bar.

I stayed probably a five minute walk from there at Caribbean Beach Cabanas. It's an adults only property, and it's been my favorite on the trip. It's small- they said 20 guests max at a time. It's right on the beach, and the staff is lovely. They have a pool and bar that serves food during the day. They also have complimentary breakfast that they deliver to your room each morning, lovely!

I mostly just relaxed during the time I spent here. The sea was super calm, and the water was so clear. The resort had kayaks, sup boards, and tubes you could borrow. I floated around in the tube for a while- it was so relaxing. Highly recommend this spot if you need some quiet R&R!

Placencia Travel Tip: Fishing and diving is popular in this area, and the boat will pick you up right on the beach of your hotel. If you're not into those activities or just sitting on the beach, I felt that there was a not much else to do in this area.

Belize, Stop #4: Hopkins

On my way to Hopkins, I stopped at Mayan World Destinations to see the waterfall. I rode a horse out there, but you can also drive or take an ATV. The area you can access has three waterfalls with pools to swim in. And they've somehow managed to get a bar/grill up there too.

The water was soooo clear. There's moments in Belize where it doesn't feel like real life. Like it's too pretty to be real. Definitely recommend stopping here if staying in Placencia or Hopkins. They also have ziplining and waterfall repelling on site.

Now Hopkins is a little beach town- smaller than Placencia. It's technically a Garifuna fishing village. The Garifuna people originated from St Vincent and their culture is known for their drumming and dancing.

I honestly didn't do much in the area besides relax. My room was right on the beach, and it was just lovely. I stayed at Coconut Row, which I would also recommend. They have a pool and restaurant/bar on site. They also do snorkeling/fishing charters right from the shore. A great spot to rest.

Hopkins Travel Tip: Bring coconut oil to wear when you're on the beach, especially at dusk and dawn. Those no-see-ums are no joke!

Belize, Stop #5: Teakettle

My last stop was to head inland to check out the jungle and the ATM cave. The greenery and water is beautiful out this way.

I stayed in Teakettle but took day trips to San Ignacio and Belmopan. Many people stay in San Ignacio to visit the Mayan ruins out that way (near the Guatemalan border). Belmopan is the capital, and I really liked this area. Cute neighborhoods, restaurants, and overall vibe. I would consider staying here next time. Where I stayed was nice (Dream Valley), but it was a 3 mile drive on dirt roads to get there. It got annoying to have to drive that every time I wanted to go in/out.

Belize has made a ton of progress in paving their roads the last few years, but it's mainly just the highways. Anything off the highway is going to be a dirt road. I definitely recommend getting a 4wd if you're exploring this area.

Now, the ATM was AMAZING, even though I was super nervous about doing it! And not going to lie, it was pretty challenging physically, but wow, what an experience. If you go to Belize, this is a MUST DO. I don't have any pictures to share because they don't allow cameras after tourists kept dropping their phones and breaking the artifacts.

Teakettle Travel Tip: Do the Actun Tunichil Muknal cave! Bring water sandals with closed toe and nice thick socks for the journey, trust me!

If you're interested in traveling to Belize, I would love to help you plan your trip! I love these sets from Amazon. They come in cute colors (the pink blush if my favorite) and have three different sizes to choose from. And while you're at it, grab this cup holder for your carry on. I like this one in particular because it has a zip pocket in the front that's perfect for your passport, and a pocket on the back for your phone. I usually travel alone and trying to hold all these things at once is stressful. Especially true when you have to go to the bathroom, like where am I putting this stuff??

Now, let's talk about the essentials for inside your luggage. I love organizing my clothes with packing cubes. I usually use a packing cube for each "type" of clothing. I'll have one for shirts, one for bathing suits, etc. It helps me stay organized when I'm at the hotel too. This past trip to Belize, I was moving to a different hotel every few days, so it was pointless to unpack. I just kept everything in my cubes.

I'm not the biggest fan of bringing jewelry on vacation, but if you are, you definitely need this jewelry case to keep everything organized. I hate having to untangle necklaces, and why am I so bad at it too? Anyway, this one will keep your necklaces tangle free and also comes in that soft pink that I love. There are two other bags I never travel without- a waterproof bag and a laundry bag. The waterproof bag can come in handy in so many scenarios. I use it when I'm going on any water activity like snorkeling, diving, etc. It's also great if you need to pack any wet bathing suits. I like this one in particular because there's a bunch of size options (the larger ones are backpack style), and it comes with a waterproof phone case too. The phone case is great for tubing, water parks, the beach, etc. Now let's talk laundry... there's nothing worse than putting your dirty clothes with your clean clothes. I need to make sure that smell is closed up. These ones are a good size, and they come in some cute designs. I, of course, love the sun one the most.

Lastly, you need a good backpack when traveling. I used this one on my last trip, and it worked out perfectly. My favorite part is the "hidden" zipper pocket in the back that's perfect for your passport and some cash. I also travel with my tablet, and it has the padded sleeve inside. If you have a larger laptop, there is a larger size available with a standalone compartment that might be better for larger devices. I'm not trying to kill my back, so I usually just bring a tablet with a portable keyboard/mouse. I like to watch TV on it when I'm relaxing in the hotel at night, and then if I have to do some work, I just add on the keyboard. Oh and the backpack has the strap on the back so you can attach it to your suitcase handle (very handy).

First, myportable fan is a LIFESAVER. I also use this in normal life because I'm always so hot (I'm sure other women can relate here). This little guy is compact and efficient. I have the pink one of course, but it comes in a few colors.

My other lifesaver is my water bottle. It drives me crazy that we can't bring drinks through security, but what are you gunna do. What you can do is bring ice through security, and then use the water fill stations on the other side. It's important to note that the stations are an American thing- you most likely won't find them on your return flight. Either way, I'll buy a drink and still pour it into the water bottle that I brought. It keeps it colder longer, and I know it's not going to leak or spill. I like this one in particular because it has a built in straw which is great because I'm spastic and most likely will spill on myself otherwise.

Now I'm not a germaphobe, but people are nasty. I always make sure I travel with WetWipes and hand sanitizer. When I first get on the plane, I'll use a wipe to clean my seat and tray table (FYI they are not cleaned very often). These also come in handy for things like the remote in the hotel room (which are also cleaned rarely). The WetWipes I linked are my favorite scent they make- Tropical Splash. Now for hand sanny, I know there are a lot of options, but the ones I linked above smell so good!

Alright, now for those long haul flights. A good neck pillowis KEY. I used this one when I took a red eye to Spain this past summer, and I highly recommend. It really keeps your neck in one place and feels cozy. I didn't use the eye mask and ear plugs that it comes with, but I know that would be helpful for some of ya'll. It also comes with a case and clip, so I usually just clip it onto my backpack. The same is true for this blanket/pillow combo. I almost always travel with a blanket because I like being cozy. What I like about the one I linked is that it can clip onto your backpack or sit on top of your roller bag (and it comes in pink, lol). My last recommendation for the plane is for my shorties (like me). This foot hammock allowed me to get way more comfortable on that flight to Spain. I was able to put my "feet up."

They really don't want to forget something- I totally get it, especially if you're traveling to a place where they aren't easily accessible. No worries! Just follow my packing guide, and you'll be all set.

Step one is finding a toiletry bag that you like. I HIGHLY recommend getting one that's lined so you don't end up with liquids on your clothes. I like this one for women because all the pockets are lined and it has a hanger (which can be a huge space saver in a small bathroom, especially for cruises). And I like this one for men. You can also hang this one, and I really like how it has a large opening for easy access. I don't know how people use those ones with one zipper. I'd be digging for days trying to find what I need. Now gender doesn't really matter- it more depends on what shape and size will work best for what you need to bring.

Okay, now for the stuff that goes inside. Most important to me is sunscreen. I'm super pale, so I feel like I'm an expert in this area. My two favorite sunscreen brands are Hawaiian Tropic and Supergoop. For HT, I prefer the lotion over the spray, although I typically buy both. I'll put the lotion on before going out, and then I'll bring the spray to reapply (because I can't handle the feeling of lotion and sand touching). Now Supergoop I really love, but it's a more expensive brand. I particularly love their facial products- one that has a tint and then the normal one. The tint one is great for me because I don't wear makeup, but this gives my skin a great look without looking weirdly dark. If I need to reapply through out the day, they make a face mist (which you can also use over makeup) that works great. Then for my body, I'll use their "play" lotion. I first tried their products when a friend bought me their starter kit (yes, that's what people buy us pale folk). It's a great option if you want to try their products without spending a lot of money. It seems like everyone has been raving about Sun Bum products lately, but I'm honestly not a big fan. Anyone else??

Next, I want to share with you some items you might not have thought to bring. First isinsect repellent, which really depends on your destination. I boughtthis one recently for my trip to Belize, and I liked it (as much as someone can love bug spray). It wasn't super greasy like some of the other brands I've tried. For us people that get motion sick, I prefer Bonineover Dramamine. It doesn't make me feel as drowsy. I don't always get sea sick, but I take Bonine when I cruise anyway because no one wants to feel like crap on vacation. Also, I would definitely take one for the hopper plane if I fly in one in the future. I was really feeling it there. Lastly, and this one is especially important if you're traveling with others, is some poo-pourri. You don't want your whole hotel room getting stinky. Just trust me on this one.

And always check what type of plugs will be at your destination (I'll do this for ya if you're one of my clients). This plug adapter is what I used for Europe. I like that it has plugs, USB, and C options.

I'm going to be honest, I'm an e-Reader convert. I was always against them. But for traveling, you can't beat the convenience and weight. No one wants to be carrying multiple books in their bag. The Kindleis great because its lightweight, has a long battery life, and doesn't glare when you're at the beach.

One item I'll never go on a plane without is noise cancelling headphones. Even if I'm trying to sleep, I will just have the noise cancelling function on without any audio. Also, for us folk that get overstimulated, it can be helpful to wear them throughout the airport. If you're willing to spend a little more, I'd recommend the Bose Quiet Comfort, otherwise I would go with these SoundCore ones.

Miscellaneous

These items didn't fit into any of the categories, but can come in handy, so I wanted to make sure I shared them with you. First is a good travel umbrella. No one wants to be stuck inside on vacation because you don't have an umbrella. A rain jacket wouldn't hurt either, but I'll have to make a different post for clothing recommendations.

This one isn't always necessary, but I know it was helpful for me to have on my last trip to Belize. I had a rental car, so I was able to explore and make stops where I liked. I did stop at a waterfall, and it was handy to have my towel with me. I highly recommend getting a microfiber one as they are smaller and lighter to travel with (and dry out faster).

Now I'm all for saving the turtles, but man I hate a paper straw. They make portable straws you can bring now, and I would highly recommend getting one if you're going on a cruise or traveling somewhere in the Caribbean. Also helpful for these type of trips are towel bands. You slip it over your chair and towel to keep your towel from blowing away. I used to us towel clips, but the bands are lighter and easier to pack.

The island is full of warm hospitality, culture, endless blue waters, and unreal sunsets. Although, the flight time can be a bit much, especially for us folks on the East Coast. It's about 5-6 hours to the West Coast, and then another 10 hours to Fiji. And don't forget about that time change. So it takes most "3 days" to get there.

New Zealand's got it all. But it might be a bit ambitious to think you can do both islands on one trip (yes, NZ is two islands). The North Island is smaller, and I'm seeing most folks want to explore the South Island. I would suggest a minimum of two weeks to get around one of the islands, but of course you could spend weeks there and not get bored. Renting a car or campervan is a must.

Costa Rica has been growing in popularity. You have some options when traveling here as well as it touches both oceans. It's a bit ambitious to think you can do both sides in one trip. Most people fly inland and then venture out to one of the coasts. Most popular has been La Fortuna, which has the Arenal Volcano, and then the Tamarindo area where you can chill at the beach, or surf if that's your thing. I'll be watching the surfers from shore lol.

The Riviera Maya in Mexico is still a client favorite for all-inclusive ease, romantic resorts, and cenotes. This area is south of Cancun and north of Tulum, so you can fly into either airport. Mexico in general is one of the most cost effective vacations you can take. So if you're trying to ball on a budget, this might be your spot! The one thing you need to consider is timing. Mexico has been facing large amounts of sargassum (seaweed) during the summer months. Stick to this area in the winter.

Aruba has always been one of my favorites since traveling there years ago for a destination wedding. The location is great as it's not in the hurricane belt, so you don't have to worry about your trip or wedding being interrupted.
Here’s the truth: planning an incredible trip while juggling Slack notifications, back-to-back meetings, and that ever-expanding inbox is basically a full-time job. Here’s what travelers should know—and how to prepare.

Why travel gets affected in a shutdown

Government shutdowns force many federal agencies to suspend non-essential operations and furlough employees whose work is not categorized as “essential.” Some essential workers must continue working, often without immediate pay, which can strain operations over time. Because many travel-related operations are at least partly federal (airport security, air traffic control, national parks), travelers are likely to see knock-on effects even though flights and services will not automatically halt.

Key areas likely to be affected:

Airports, TSA, and air travel

Flights will continue since airlines are independently funded. TSA agents are considered essential and will remain on duty, but since they’re working without immediate pay, staffing shortages could happen if employees stop showing up. That means longer lines at security checkpoints. Air traffic controllers also remain on the job, though hiring and training are put on hold, and infrastructure projects may be delayed. If staffing becomes strained, delays and cancellations may pile up. Safety inspections and certifications may also slow down.

National parks, monuments, and public lands

Many national parks and monuments are federally managed, so visitor centers, guided tours, restrooms, and some road access may close or run with minimal staff. Trails and open-air spaces might still be accessible, but with little oversight or emergency response available. A few parks may stay open with state or local support, but popular sites like the Grand Canyon are at risk of partial closure.

International travel, visa, and passport services

Passport and visa services are typically funded through application fees, so they often continue. U.S. embassies and consulates abroad also keep operating, at least for essential functions like visa issuance and emergency services. However, slower communication and administrative delays are possible.

Other modes: trains, cruises, ports

Amtrak is expected to continue operating, as are cruise lines. Customs and Border Protection officers will keep working at ports of entry, but longer wait times at borders are possible if staffing levels take a hit.

How severe the disruption will be depends on duration

In a short shutdown, many of the worst effects may be avoided. But if the shutdown drags on, staffing shortages and strained resources could create a snowball effect. In the past, long shutdowns led to TSA absenteeism, airport terminal closures, and even grounded flights when air traffic control staff shortages became critical.

Tips & advice for travelers

Build in extra buffer time at airports.

Stay flexible with flight itineraries and avoid tight layovers.

Sign up for airline and airport alerts to track delays or schedule changes.

Check the status of national parks or monuments before visiting.

Carry all documentation, including passports and visas, in case of processing slowdowns.

Expect longer wait times at customs and immigration checkpoints.

Have backup funds and flexible bookings in case you need to pivot plans.

Review your travel insurance to see what’s covered for delays or cancellations.

Keep an eye on the news for real-time updates as the situation develops.

Bottom line

A U.S. government shutdown doesn’t stop travel, but it does make it messier. The longer it lasts, the more disruptive it becomes, especially at airports and national parks. Travelers should stay patient, add extra time into their schedules, and prepare for possible delays.

Store them securely in the cloud or email them to yourself. If your wallet or bag goes missing, you’ll have all the info you need without going full panic mode.

Secure Your Home

Grab a digital plug or an old school timer to set at least one lamp to go on and off when you're gone. Leave your outside light on as well. When your home is dark for days at a time, anyone casing the area will notice. Also, have someone grab your mail.
